The Magic Of A Session!
There is something genuinely very-special, about a traditional Irish music session. Played well, it doesn’t just take the individual but the whole crowd on a wonderful magical journey where time stands still and before you know it, it’s three o’clock in the morning and the place is still jammed! The few guys who started with a guitar and a fiddle and an accordion has gradually swelled as various individuals arrive armed with tin whistles, bodhrains, banjos and such like, and as the music grows so too does the atmosphere and the energy until the very building itself seems to be rocking in time to the music!
Being able to play the piano or indeed any kind of musical instrument for that matter is a great help! At least you will get a seat, if you’re lucky! If you can tell a story, recite a bit of poetry or sing a song then you will be made equally welcome. If not, you can simply sit down, relax and enjoy the beer, the banter and the craic and soak up the atmosphere that these sessions are renowned for. There is one thing for sure, you will return home happy, enlightened by a wonderful musical experience BUT, you’ll probably need another few days off to recover!
Please Take Note
Please be aware that there are several events created similar to ours but be sure you read ALL the small print. If the offer appears to be too good to be true, then it usually is. Gerry Flynn’s company was the first to offer this kind of event over thirty years ago and has watched others come along and try to imitate but, our own customers will tell you that the others have never been able to replicate the genuine friendly welcome, the variety of entertainment nor most importantly the sheer value for money! Always read the small print and don’t be misled by cheaper lead – in prices.
The Entertainment!
First, you must understand that when a group of our wonderful customers gets together at an event, they all know each other from previous gatherings and tend to congregate in the bar, not only at night but frequently during the day also! This is because a pub or a hotel bar at one of our events is not merely a place for taking a drink! In fact, they have become renowned throughout the world as theatres for story-telling, backdrops for romance, homes away from home, keepers of the spirit, and of the Guinness of course! They are places to be revered and admired. They are ALWAYS full of character and frequently full of characters too.
This is often where you find the lifelong friends you hadn’t met yet and one of the reasons why you will come to another event soon after the one you are currently on is over! The gatherings in the bars have over the years have become legendary, as centers of music, song, and dance with impromptu performances by customers, often hugely talented customers and invariably supported by our own local or visiting artists. And they are an absolute joy to watch and to listen to.
The Health Benefits!
Dancing is the cornerstone of Gerry Flynn Events, and according to a recent study in The New England Journal of Medicine, dancing can boost your memory and help prevent the onset of dementia as you get older. As we get older, we also tend to get stiff and the old joints begin to creak a bit. So, in preparation for our upcoming events if you’re feeling tense or stressed out, you might want to grab a partner, turn up the music, and dance! In a controlled study in the Journal of Applied Gerontology, researchers found that partner dancing and musical accompaniment can help bring about stress relief and diminish depression. It lifts your spirits, according to a study that tested the effects of dancing on people with depression. Patients who participated in an upbeat group dance showed the fewest depression symptoms and the most vitality.
Also, how about this! Dancing is a wonderful activity for those at risk from heart problems! People who took up waltzing, for example, improved their heart health, breathing, and quality of life significantly so, if you’re bored with your bike, and lonely from jogging around the park in the rain, you will find that dancing is just as helpful in providing exercise and there is less chance of you being run over by a bus.
